Chicago @40: The Band and Its City
The Chicago History Museum presents a special exhibit: 'Chicago @40: The Band and Its City.' Chicago is one of the most successful U.S. pop/rock and roll bands of all time. To honor their 40th anniversary, museum curators teamed up with the band to create this commemorative installation. The display includes objects and materials drawn from the band's archive, recording their remarkable history. This exhibit runs until December 7. The Chicago History Museum is located at 1601 N. Over 1,500 seniors in DuPage County rely on the DuPage Senior Citizens Council for nutritious meals each day. 'Project Vote Smart' Offers Free 'Voter's Self-Defense Manuals'
New funding from the Ford and Carnegie foundations has enabled 'Project Vote Smart' to start shipping free 2008 'Voter's Self-Defense Manuals' to all citizens requesting them. The manuals provide citizens with a sampling of factual information from the Vote Smart databases, which cover more than 40,000 incumbents and candidates running for office this electrion year, from state legislature to the Presidency. The Voter's Self-Defense Manuals are available by request at Vote Smart or by calling the Project's Voter's Research Hotline at 1-888-VOTE SMART.

Volunteer in Near-Paradise
Those who volunteer at The Morton Arboretum Children's Garden discover the joys of seeing youths learn and flourish. The Arboretum seeks additional persons to join a magnificent volunteer corps that has helped the garden become one of the top family destinations in Chicagoland. Volunteers are needed weekdays and weekends. Anyone age 21 or older may apply. All volunteers must pass a criminal history background check and their names must not appear on the sex offender registry. Learn About the Emerald Ash Borer
The Morton Arboretum is presenting a traveling exhibition which highlights the value of urban forests and the devastating effects of Emerald ash borers, as well as the furniture-making process and use of ash as lumber. The exhibition: 'Rising from Ashes: Furniture from Lost Trees' features at least 24 pieces of fine furniture that the Chicago Furniture Design Association members created from ash trees that were destroyed. This exhibit runs through September 7 and is open from 10am-4pm. The Morton Arboretum is located at I-88 and Rte. 53 in Lisle. Hunter Tylo Scheduled to Run in 'Change the Face' 5K
Hunter Tylo of CBS' The Bold and The Beautiful will join hundreds of Chicagoans for the first annual Change the Face Race, a 5K run and family walk to benefit the American Epilepsy Outreach Foundation (AEOF). Breast Cancer Network of Strength Illinois will board the Odyssey II cruise ship for their fall fundraising event, 'The Journey Continues' on September 14. Come out to the Jobs For Youth Chicago Breakfast Club Fundraiser on Thursday, September 18th from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M., hosted by chef John Caputo and A Mano (335 N Dearborn) in Chicago.

The JFY Breakfast Club provides breakfast and refreshments for participants in the Jobs For Youth program who cannot otherwise readily afford these basic needs. JFY helps young men and women from low-income families become a part of the economic mainstream.

Chicago Police Memorial Foundation Candlelight Vigil
The Honorable Mayor Richard M. Daley, The Chicago Police Department Memorial Foundation and The Chicago Police Department host a Candlelight Vigil on Thursday, September 18, at 7:30pm at Gold Star Memorial and Park, located on Chicago Park District grounds near Waldron Drive (in the shadow of Soldier Field). The Candlelight Vigil is an annual event hosted by the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, which is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to honoring the lives of our fallen heroes. The Vigil is open to the public.

Project AWARE Foundation's International Cleanup Day
Join Scuba Systems and other local volunteers at Greenwood Beach in Evanston for the entire day or for a few hours. Both divers and non-divers alike are invited to help clean up our local beaches and enjoy a day on the beach with giveaways from local retailers and prizes and giveaways throughout the day as well as a prize drawing for those that have pre-registered for the event! Conquer Chiari Walk Across America
The Conquer Chiari Walk Across America is being held at 20 locations throughout the country on September 20. The Chicagoland Walk will be held at Deer Grove East (Cook County Forest Preserve District) in Palatine. Registration will be at 8am and the walk starts at 9am. All proceeds from the walk will be used to fund research grants to improve the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of Chiari Malformations. Registration can be completed by visiting Conquer Chiari. Those who register prior to August 15 with a minimum donation or sponsorship of $20 will receive an official walk T-shirt the day of the event. If someone is unable to attend the event, I ask that they consider sponsoring a walker. Sponsoring a walker can also be done through the Conquer Chiari website.

Hispanocare, Inc. and the Breast Cancer Network of Strength Illinois -- formerly Y-ME Illinois -- will welcome the Sharon Rose Wig and Prosthesis Mobile Salon to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, 836 W. Wellington Ave. on Thursday, September 25, 2008. The mobile salon was created by Breast Cancer Network of Strength Illinois to bring needed services directly to areas where patients are receiving their cancer care. From 9am to 2pm, the specially trained fitters will provide free wigs, bras and breast prostheses to the North Side community. 6th Annual Midtown 5K Run and Walk--Free Training with Entry!
Midtown Athletic Club Palatine will host its 6th Annual 5K Run and Walk on Saturday, September 27, along with a complimentary training program for first-time 5K-ers entitled 'Run Your First 5K.' Training sessions will be held on eight consecutive Saturdays leading up to the event and conducted by Midtown certified personal trainers. The 3.1 mile course will start and finish at Midtown Athletic Club Palatine, 1760 N. Hicks Rd., and wind through the Deer Grove East Forest Preserve. Chicago Humanities Festival Benefit Evening
Three grandes dames of jazz, opera and Broadway -- Tony award-winning soprano Barbara Cook, preeminent jazz vocalist and Grammy-winner Dianne Reeves and mezzo soprano Frederica von Stade, one of opera's most beloved figures, share the stage for the first time on Friday, October 3, at the Chicago Humanities Festival Benefit Evening, themed "Once in a Lifetime." The Benefit Evening begins at 5:30pm with cocktails at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave., followed by an elegant dinner at 6:30pm and a premier raffle. October is National Dyslexia Month, and the Illinois Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, located in Glen Ellyn, will be conducting a two-day conference during October, intended to increase awareness about dyslexia and promote understanding of some of the typical 'warning signs' of dyslexia.
